The story

On every project, someone has to prove that each piece of equipment was started up the right way. One report per unit: the rooftop units, the air handlers, the pumps and the fans. Reviewing those reports is a big part of a commissioning provider's job.

The spreadsheet that almost worked

Tired of reports that came back in every shape and size, our founder once built an Excel table that turned one equipment list into clean, consistent startup sheets. On screen, it was exactly what a commissioning provider wants: every unit, every reading, the same layout every time.

What happened on the job

It didn't work out that way. The contractor printed the blank sheets. Techs filled them in by hand on the roof. The paper rode back in the truck, and someone in the office typed it all into Excel so the clean sheets could be made.

  1. Printed blankFrom a file nobody updated
  2. Filled by handOn a roof, in the wind, gloves off
  3. Carried backDays in a truck
  4. Typed in againGuessing at the handwriting
  5. Sent lateWith blanks, and back it comes

Three people did the same job, and every hand-off lost something: a reading skipped, a number misread, a page that never made it back. The report the commissioning provider finally got was late, and still had holes in it.

The real problem was the phone

Ask why the techs don't just fill it in on a phone, and the answer is the same at almost every company: our guys aren't tech people, a phone would be too hard. So the paper stays, and so does all the retyping.

That answer is fair. Most software isn't built for someone standing on a roof with gloves on, squinting at a screen in the sun, who just wants to get to the next unit.

So StartupSend has one job

Prove that a phone can be easier than a clipboard. Big targets. One thing at a time. Always showing what's left. Then keep every advantage the spreadsheet had, working quietly behind it: fill a value across every unit of the same kind, work out superheat and subcooling, point out a number that looks off.

When the tech finishes on the roof, the report is finished. The office doesn't retype it. The commissioning provider gets what they need the first time.

What we believe

Four rules every screen follows.

Easier than paper, or it doesn't ship.

Every field screen is judged by one person: a tech on a roof, gloves on, in the sun, in a hurry. If it slows them down, it isn't done.

Readings over checkmarks.

A startup is proven by operating data: pressures, temperatures, volts and amps. Our sheets put the readings first and the checklist second.

Suggest, never block.

The phone points out a number that looks off and says why. The person standing at the unit decides what to do about it.

Your data is yours.

Download all of it whenever you like. We don't sell it, show ads, or use your reports to train AI. AI is included in every plan: when your techs use Read the tag or your company switches on an AI check, tag photos and notes go to our AI providers only to be read for you.

See if your techs go back to paper.
